A4 lost 1st gear and reverse
Hi there, I heard a clunk and next thing I lost first gear and reverse, I have a black1998 Audi A4 2.8Quattro, sport edition, factory lowered card, realkly nice handling with 210,000 hwy driven kms.
Should I scrap the car, or is it worth fixing, does anybody know of the best place to have the tranny fied, at a reasonable price.
Otherwise the car run great, had to spend a fair amount of money over the last 3 years (water pump, front arms, pulleys, timing belt, radiator etc, etc), spent over $5,000 in the last two years.
Now I am seemingly at the end of the road with this lovely car, if it is reasonble I will fix, if not, it is is up for sale for parts.
Thanks
Peter.

Re: A4 lost 1st gear and reverse
I would check out Car-Part.com--Used Auto Parts Market and see what a tranny is worth.
I did a quick search on them there and found between $900-1400 for them with 112k on the cheaper end to 52k on the more expensive end.
You will need to check your vin to search them exactly. A tranny re-re on an AWD car is about 4-5 hrs labor for somebody only mediocre at doing it, a fast mechanic could do it in 3 hrs. So play 200-400 in labor.
Really a used trans and swapping it would be the best bet.
I have done tranny rebuilds on Honda/DSM's a bunch of times. Depending on what you need to change, just to take the trans appart, order the parts you need from the dealer and put it back together a lot of times costs as much as a good used tranny. A gear set with syncros for 2nd gear in a GSR 1.8L trans is almost 500bux nevermind my labor to change it.
