'01 A4 1.8T Quattro - Thumping/Clunking Noise When Turning Right
Hello all,
First post for me. I have a 2001 A4 1.8T Quattro manual tranny with just under 59k miles. I've had the car for nearly 3 years with no problems whatsoever (i've only put about 15k miles on the car in 3 years). However, fairly recently I've had an intermittent noise coming from the front end when turning right. It's hard to describe the noise (especially to type it out) but it's a thumping or clunking (possibly rubbing) noise that comes from the front right side when turning right.
When I say turning right, this is not on tight turns in say a parking lot, it's only at a decent speed (25mph+) on turns in a road. The noise is faster if I'm driving faster and slower if I'm driving slower.
The one thing that confuses me, is that I recently had a slow leak in the right rear tire which I had patched. After having the tire patched, the noise went away completely. Now (about a month later) the noise is back.
Anyone have any suggestions? Or some things to check myself to help diagnose the problem? As money is a little tight right now, I would like to try to diagnose the problem myself before taking it to the dealer.
Any help would be GREATLY appreciated,
Adam

I would suggest jacking up the front end and checking out all your balljoints for any play. I've had some wierd noise before too, which turned out to be balljoints/control arm.

Sounds like it may be a bad CV joint. They usually die after the rubber boots or their band clamps break allowing water in and grease out. While you're checking your ball joint, inspect the rubbers around the CV joint for damage, if you see any, you might want to take it in for a professional opinion on it.
