2003 Audi A4 3.0L - Painting Plastic Trim
Thought I'd give a little back to the forum that has helped me out many times. I painted the plastic trim on my car and it turned out great. All for $80.
Here are the steps:
1) Wash trim with soap and water. Let dry.
2) Lightly sand with 800 grit sandpaper. Take your time and be picky. You can even fill in any deep scratches and holes before. I was lucky my trim was in good shape. Other than the paint. Light scratches and plastic chips are fine. The paint will take care of that if sanded evenly.
3) Rinse off plastic again with soap and water. Dry completely.
4) Mask car carefully. This takes some time. Hire a friend.
4.5) Optional: You could at this point apply Anti-Static solution to prevent dust buildup if you turn this into a 2 day process. I painted right away and omitted this step.
5) Apply Plastic Adhesion Promotor spray (2-3 light coats then one heavier) wait 10 mins before each coat.
6) Apply paint within 10 mins. (I used VW flat black spray) 10 mins between each coat (2-3 light coats then 1 heavier coat)
9) Wait 30hr to dry
10) Apply clear coat (2-3 light coats then 1 heavier coat) Wait 10 mins before each coat. And your done.
11). Wait a week to buff. I've heard a month from my research, however, no paint rubbed off when I did mine.
This was a surprisingly easy DIY job to pull off and saved me hundreds.
Thought I'd share.
